Sepultura - Dante XXI album cover

When I found out I was going to review Sepultura's new album, I was extremely happy because they're one of my favorite bands (even without Max Cavalera). Now, it's time to move my eye away from their poster and get started with this review...
Sepultura started as a Death Metal act back in 1983. Brazil never offered many opportunities for a Metal band but talented Sepultura managed to sign a contract with Roadrunner Records. Influenced by Punk and Metal, after their first brutal records, they created a very attractive hybrid of Thrash, Hardcore and Punk while adding some Brazilian musical elements. Roots (1996) is the most appropriate example. After many records, fame and money, Max Cavalera left the band under really bad circumstances to be replaced by Derrick Green. The current lineup recorded Against (1998), Nation (2001), Roorback (2003) and now Dante XXI (2006).
These guys used to be one of my favorite bands. After the addition of Derrick Green, I was slightly disappointed with the stuff they came up with. This time they managed to meet my expectations and produced a real diamond! From the first contact with this CD it's like someone kicked you right in the face! Raw power coming from the speakers. The record is based on The Divine Comedy, written by Dante Alighieri, in the 14th century. The book contains Dante's descriptions of Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. That' s why the record is divided into 3 parts. Sepultura have adapted the book to fit our times. This time they used strings, cellos etc. This way they achieved making every song fit in its part. So many different elements that make this record a must have for not just their loyal fans. Sometimes you can sense an old thrashy feeling. You see, tracks like Crown And Miter bring back memories (call me D.R.I.). Pantera? Slayer? No... Something in between. It's both old and new. Regarding the guy behind the microphone? Listen to this guy! Is he the son of Anselmo and Cavalera? His voice has greatly improved! Igor Cavalera also adds some technique to his drum parts (how better can this guy get?)... I've already listened to the CD 9,999,999,999,999,999,999 times. Too bad! My CD player just exploded...
I don' t know if this CD is so damn good or if I'm just a dreamer who wishes Sepultura were still a Thrash/Death Metal band ripping out our ears. You have to find out for yourselves. As for me, I'm going to buy a new CD player. I have a Sepultura CD waiting for me...
