Emissary Of All Plagues
Revel In Flesh
Death Metal is really outstanding in terms of sonority. I'm speaking that due the fact that it supports every kind of musical experimentalism you can think of. But there are those bands that hold ground on a more traditional outfit, on that trend that we call Old School Death Metal. One of them is the German quintet REVEL IN FLESH, a destroyer of ears that is releasing their fourth album, "Emissary of All Plagues". Being honest, there are some melodic lines that are not so evident that show that they aren't a band that is merely looking to the past. No, these guys are looking to the future, and their musical brutality knows no limit. But they're creating some dirty and fascinating songs, using and abusing from the Old School Death Metal insight, but being creative, so be prepared for the massacre!
On the mixing and mastering of the album, the name of Dan Swanö appears, so it's already a guarantee of a fine work. The sonority of the album is excellent, keeping that raw and nasty sound from the past, but with a modern and brutal outfit. So, you'll understand everything that the band is playing, but the oppressive brutality is present on the entire album. The cover art created by Juanjo Castellano is really amazing, a great and somber art. The fast and brutal "Emissary of All Plagues" (with excellent guttural vocals and good rhythmic changes), the rawness and filth guitar riffs of "Casket Ride" (but pay attention as some graven melodies appear), the somber atmosphere of the slow tempos shown on "Fortress of Gloom" (excellent vocals, indeed), the fast and massive Old School attack presented on "The Dead Lives On", and the introspective rawness of "Dead to this World" can be said as their finest moments. But it's a sin to not hear and love their Death Metal version for "Doctor Doctor", an old hymn from UFO that keeps the original features of the song, but imposing the brutal grasp of REVEL IN FLESH on it. Lovely and great album!
