Red Eleven - Collect Your Scars album cover

RED ELEVEN is a Rock/Alternative/Metal band formed in 2009, based out of Finland. This is the band's second studio album and contains eleven tracks. "I Follow" has some electronica in the opening, building into a somber and shadowy sound, fueled by radiant vocal harmonies and a chorus that shines brightly. I am unsure exactly how to categorize the genre here, except to simply say that it is strong music in every sense. "Just a Game" has a peppy and potent main riff and the vocals, once again, take center stage in building the sound. They have a striking sense of writing melodies as well, and absolutely bury the strings in the guitar solo. "Different Kind" pushes lush but edgy, vocal harmonies in the verses, combined with a fast picked guitar riff that really holds everything together tightly. Some of the ways they connect the passages here hint at some Progressive leanings, or at the very least, just intelligent songwriting.

"Last Grain of Sand" has a soft piano opening but holds some intrigue about what might come from there. Instead of an obvious about-face, the song builds slowly with delicate tranquility, reaching an expansive crescendo just past the mid-mark. The sound here is all about emotional sensation. "Know Yourself" has a heavy keyboard riff that leads to a swinging rhythm in the verses, conducive to the some of the spoken vocal parts. Stronger in the electronic sound, it still maintains a heaviness that somehow keeps melody in the forefront. "Tainted Scene" is another thoughtful, sort of reflective song that takes a sharp key change with the advent of the chorus and brings a thick, full sound to the fray. "And so I Took his Life" is a longer song with a dreamy feeling, like something you might play to wind down at night. There is a real sense of satisfaction here as well, as you wouldn't want for anything else but this.

"The Mark" goes full-bore the other way; with a fast and heavy main riff and varied vocal style that is sometimes clear and other times gritty. This is more of a traditional Hard Rock song that is just meant to be enjoyed, as is. "Too Much to Ask" continues to show the versatility of the songwriting on this album, with bright acoustic guitar notes and whispered, lamenting vocals that describe a pivotal and poignant moment in whether a relationship will continue or not. "Yarn of Life" is the closing track with a jovial rhythm that comes from wooden block strikes keeping the meter. At first, it's ethereal and ambient to some degree, but turns sharply with contrast and fanfare. There is a lot of thought in this song. Overall, I must say that I was impressed with the diversity and versatility of songs on this album. Melody and outstanding vocals are held as the constant, which makes this an album any fan of Rock/Hard Rock or Metal would enjoy.<
