I don't know if it's just me, but lately there's been something sinister lurking in the world of Black Metal, but not in a good sense; promo after promo arrives with some foreign element added and even more strangely, advertised as a plus in their press releases. Black Metal combined with Ambient. Black Metal combined with Industrial. Black Metal combined with polish polka and dutch wooden shoe dancing folk elements. Now after reading that ONHEIL is greeted as the Black Metal Iron Maiden, I won't be surprised if a sub-genre such as Black New Wave of British Heavy and Hair Metal arises as well.
Still my curious side urged me to listen how the hell you can combine these things. The answer is quite simple. Not that successfully. Even though the titles sound quite in place for a brutal release, the ending result sounds a bit awkward. It's clearly two different genres for most of the tracks; IRON MAIDEN music, with some southern hard rock elements sprinkled on top but mainly staying on the power metal side and admittedly good Black Metal vocals that match the Immortal-ish black parts of the album but still feel completely foreign on top of the non-black music.
I'm not saying that this is a bad release, far from it but it is plain weird for most of its part. There are people who might enjoy it the fusion elements, but there are also people who will appreciate only the real black parts which elevate the album to decent status. Production is good enough to give it a shot if you're curious of how these elements can blend, but there's nothing more to be found there and no originality even with this weird mix of different worlds.
