Nonexist - Throne of Scars album cover

Ah Metal, sometimes you never cease to amaze me. Whether it's the addition of flutes in Death Metal or the incredible mixture of Black Metal and orchestration there's always something spectacular about you. Death Metal though, seems to be one in a thousand on if you'll find a good band. If you're trying to find a band that stands out and does something new then the odds are even higher. Queue NONEXIST and their new album "Throne of Scars"; this is a Death Metal album featuring both growls and semi clean vocals - and something that I'm pretty sure the Metal community has shunned.

The album kicks off strong with "Pyroclastic Cluster Torment" with both growls and blastbeats leading the charge on your ears its hard hitting, until a point about half way through. Keyboard kicks in, I like me some keyboard and although the tone is a little strange and doesn't exactly mix great with the guitars this isn't the problem though. I could be wrong, but I'm nearly certain that there is autotune in this album. This isn't the only song either, "A Promise Unfullfilled" and a few others feature this as well and I'm not sure about you as the reader but one iffy choice can make me lose complete interest in an album.

Now of course, this album features some destructive songs; it's Death Metal after all. "The New Flesh" is straight Death with a mix of "Planetary Duality" era style of THE FACELESS mixed in, while "Cathedrals Beyond" takes on a bit less riffy of a song, chugging along and never really getting to technical. Although the album has song choices I would personally question, in the end it's Death Metal and it's also up to you what you personally like. It would also probably be fair to note that this band is fronted by ex-ARCH ENEMY vocalist Johan Liiva, which would explain why the growls are so consistent and awesome throughout the album.

To summarise what the hell I'm talking about, this is Death Metal from NONEXIST, they write some good riffs, they have some really powerful songs and they also have some autotune. Personally my first couple listens through the autotune made me tune out the songs a little bit (or a lot), it's a lot better of an album than I gave it credit for in the beginning. Due to this reason exactly, I'm glad I held off on writing this review for a little bit.
