Night Gaunt - The Room album cover

NIGHT GAUNT is a doom metal band hailing from the darkest pits of Rome, Italy. Releasing a self titled in May of 2014 and an EP called "Jupiters Fall" in August 2016, the band has toured almost all of Italy alongside the likes of GRAVE MIASMA, MYSTIFIER, BLACK OATH, SATAN'S SATYRS, CORONTE and DEMONOMANCY as well as taking part in metal fests such as Hammer of Doom 2016 and Black Forest Fest 2017. They have rooted themselves in the deep Italian tradition of gloom and doom, and the quartets latest release is every bit as bleak as their previous outings.

The 38 minutes of seething depression opens up with a soul crushing, dissonant chord progression on "The Room." The layered doomy riff is simplified as the clean vocals of GC come along, a rich bellow that is not unlike Warrel Dane (RIP) of NEVERMORE, and the tone fits the four piece's sound quite well. "Penance" begins with a hypnotic guitar scale that is punctuated by a dark and dissonant groove that will have everyone in the room head banging, if not moshing. The layered vocals complete the atmospheric flair that NIGHT GAUNT is known for.

"Oval Portrait" is a dreary passage of pure desolation, featuring plenty of layered guitars with heavy reverb. Up next is "Veil" which wastes no time to throw down some seriously evil sounding riffage, more grooves that are almost fast enough to be almost hardcore sounding. After harmonized guitar solo backed with chunky bass guitar, the latter half of the album throws down two near-ten minute songs. "Labyrinth" opens with more slow, doomy chord progressions, Tystnaden beating his toms in a warlike fashion, preparing for the lament of pure misery to begin. The dreary closer has plenty of diversity to give any new listener a lasting impression that the ever-saturnine Italians are not going anywhere anytime soon. Long time doom metal fans from all over will find an appreciation for the talent found here.
