I remember these guys back from 2001, when all the Metal magazines were flooded from advertisements of Unique Leader Records who had just rereleased the band's "Pharaoh Of The Gods" album. Yeah, you got it right. The well known leading force in quality brutal Death Metal spent time and money on these guys, something that should mean something, but to tell you the truth I never really realized that move. NECRONOMICON isn't exactly the band that fits in Unique Leader's classic sound.

Anyway, let's see what this Canadian trio can do in its brand new, third full-length album. First of all, let's note that the band exists since 1991, but has only produced three full-length albums. The first thing this shows me is that NECRONOMICON isn't such a productive band. The second is that when a band releases an album after so many years you expect it to be kickass, which unfortunately it isn't...
NECRONOMICON is one of those Death Metal bands who try to mix the brutality of our beloved music with the atmosphere of Middle Eastern (mostly Egyptian) sounds. The band's attitude is this classic Heavy Metal many Death Metal bands have (absorbed in their music of course), which shows a huge influence by the Polish beasts VADER and the songs are not that bad, but in this specific kind of music you have to do something extra to earn the attention of the listener/consumer. I mean, I listened to "The Return Of The Witch" a few times, but after that I got back to much better releases from this scene.

In times when bands like NILE and BEHEMOTH are getting even better as time goes by and newcomers like AETERNAM offer quality releases, NECRONOMICON should try more to "survive" in the Metal scene. As I said, not bad, but could surely be a lot better since we are talking about skilled musicians here.
