Mortuus - Grape of the Vine album cover

If Europeans are known for any sort of music, it has to be Black Metal. Church burnings, face paint, goats, and Satan are all things associated with this genre mainly populated by bands from countries such as Finland, Norway and Sweden. The Swedish duo of MORTUUS have produced a record that shows these very themes, and does Black Metal proud.

Each song of this album is heavy, dark, morbid and all the other adjectives that can be used to create a terrifying image of hell. The voice of Tehom is so devilish it was as if I was visited by Satan himself. Low ambient growls populate the songs of the record, never failing to leave you feeling uneasy as it rumbles through your ears. The guitar and drum work also does an incredible job of creating an eery atmosphere that runs throughout the album. The production quality is also of a very high standard. The guitars do sound incredible, it feels like the songs are clouding your mind, which I feel is perfect for an album of this genre. I always take note of the production of an album, I feel it's essential in creating the sound that the band want, and here it is done perfectly

However, whilst the songs may be good themselves, they are all very similar. It got to the point where I didn't know where a song ended and another begun. I do like to hear some variance in songs, but this just doesn't appear here. I was slightly disappointed in the record because of this, but I can't be too mad at the fact that the songs are still good, if it's not broken don't fix it, right?

I did enjoy this record, I just wish they added some faster sections or even something soft and slow to change it up a bit. However, the quality of the songs is top notch, so I would still give this one a listen!
