Melyra - Saving You From Reality album cover

When we all talk about the Brazilian Metal scene, the names of SEPULTURA, ANGRA and KRISIUN are the names that fans throughout the world will remember at first. But like a massive iceberg, they're just the peak of the whole thing, because there are amazing bands on Brazilian underground. And MELYRA, from Rio de Janeiro, is one of them. And they're back, with their first full length, "Saving You From Reality".

Their first release, the EP "Catch Me If You Can", showed a work on the vein of NWOBHM, but they evolve a lot. Now, on the album, the their style matured a lot, going into a modern traditional Heavy Metal with some influences from Hard Rock, still done with charming melodies (the guitar duets are excellent in this way), but now bearing a greater dose of musical aggressiveness (the use of guttural voices is a fine example how thing improved in this direction). It's heavier and more aggressive than before, but still has MELYRA's personality. Celo Oliveira produced, mixed and mastered the album, balancing perfectly the needs of weight, aggressiveness and melodies that the band's music demands. And all sounds clear and with the right instrumental tunes, all in their due places. And on the art for the cover, Carlos Fides created an amazing art that bears the deeper meaning of the album's title, creating a subjective link between MELYRA's lyrics with the universe of Lewis Carroll on the book "Alice in the Wonderland".

Weight, melodies, aggressiveness and a silk touch of elegance is what these Metal girls offer (yes, it's a female quintet), and all the songs are excellent. But "My Delirium" (with a heavy and aggressive insight and a fine work on vocals, contrasting the clean tunes with guttural parts, and charming guitar parts), "Fantasy" (a song with hooking and elegant melodies, again with excellent guitar parts), the introspective "Dead Light" (a touch of melancholy can be heard, and there are excellent backing vocals), the accessible "Eye of the Maze" (with the guitars using a Hard Rock/Glam metal insight) and "Lucid Dream" (a good work from bass guitar and drums is presented here), "Zizi" (with abrasive and bitter parts, but still using excellent melodies), and "Run & Burn" (a perfect balance between heavier parts with melodic touches, and presenting a great chorus) are the best ones (as it would be an easy work to find "the best songs" on this album).
