Warrior Race

IMPERIAL AGE is a symphonic metal band from Russia, with influences from heavy hitters such as MANOWAR, THERION, and NIGHTWISH. I'm a big fan of symphonic and power metal, basically anything with strong vocals and a dedication to delivering strong sound. So I was excited to dig into "Warrior Race", and the album did not disappoint. "Anthem of Valour" gets the album off to a strong start with big soaring vocals and a pace like a hundred stallions riding into battle. "Aryavarta" mellows things out with a solemn aria before bringing in the drums and bass, with the Vox organ adding a beautiful melody throughout. "Warrior Race" switches things up yet again with a change in vocal style, changing the operatic sound for guttural growls befitting a death metal song. Next, IMPERIAL AGE covered THERION with their song, "To Mega Therion", and I have to say, I loved the blending of vocals. A high-pitched operatic chorus, blending with powerful male vocals for a brilliant cohesive piece.
"Death Guard" has a great blend of chilling and empowering sound, and highlights the warbling vocal range of Alexandra Sidorova, while the steady drumbeat keeps you hyped up for more. Track six is called "Battle Heart", and it has a distinctly Celtic sound with pipes playing an upbeat chord throughout, and drumming that reminds me of river dancing. "Vanaheim" is another track that starts slow but it maintains a mellow and reflective tone. I don't know if there was a first one, but "Time of Virginity II", has a wistful quality that isn't exactly melancholic, but it isn't as upbeat as some of the other entries. The album wraps up with a live recording of "Turn the Sun Off!", a decent offering that combined things that made individual songs unique to bring the album to a close. Frankly, I would have preferred something more unique, as the album was fairly consistent with some gimmicks strewn about, but still a pretty good song.
