Idre - Idre album cover

The promo of this beast has puzzled me for quite a while. I was in a complete writer's block about what to write about them, because quite frankly it's been a very long time since I've listened to doom metal. Only 2 songs, I thought, how is that a full album? And then I've started listening, very carefully... And here is what happened...

"Factorie" starts out with a loud, traditional old school doom metal intro, then turns into a clean ¾ riff, that is basically the verses, the clean vocals remind me of PARADISE LOST a lot, which is a good thing. The music is basically a blend of things I haven't heard, and a lot of NEUROSIS and other old school doom metal bands. Progressive?Maybe. Doom? Definitely. The distorted guitar parts are very dirty, as fitting to the genre, but the part around the middle of the song, is almost death metal, cool break. All in all, it's a 26:41 beast of a piece, that doom lovers would love every second of. It is a piece that gives you the whole package. Filled with despair, sadness, melancholy, good genre-oriented riffs, all in all even this is more than enough to make you want to go huddle in a dark corner. A job well done.

"Witch Trial" starts out with a march drum roll, which could only mean one thing in this kind of album - death row. And then the guitars come in, and play a western movie kind of riff. Eyebrow shoots up. And stays there for the first quarter of the song. After the first quarter we go back to the ¾ clean guitar riff, and verses, with quite good clean vocals. More melodic than what has happened in the previous beast of song, which is a welcome change. After the verses, even the distorted guitars continue with the melodic line, all in all the piece is much easier on the casual music listener's ears.

As a whole, the album does not go easy on the casual listener's ears. It's a very hard album to stomach, very dark, heavy and as a whole as doom metal should be.
