"Indoctrination" is the third album by HALCYON WAY and the successor to the 2010 album, "Building the Towers". "Indoctrination" includes 5 new tracks, a cover of SAMMY HAGAR / STEEL DRAGON "Stand up", a radio edit of "The Age of Betrayal"and a remix of "The System" both of them from the previous album. HALCYON WAY plays Progressive Metal with Thrash elements and use melodic vocals accompanied here and there by some deathly grunts. For review purposes I will divide "Indoctrination" into two sections. The first one includes the five new songs and the second the rest.
"On Black Wings" is a killer tune that combines beautiful melodies and growls. "Our Finest Hour" and "Indoctrination" are also really great tunes. Finally, "Revolution is Now" and "The Wages of War" are probably the best songs of the album. Most of them are mid-tempo compositions but there are a lot of variations in speed and feeling which make the song very interesting and enjoyable to listen while being an occasional headbanger.
The second part includes the cover song "Stand Up" which neither appealed to me nor fitted with the general style of the album. "The Age of Betrayal" is a great song but has already appeared in the previous release and it is almost the same as before. "The System" was remixed and though in the beginning I didn't like it that much, after a few repeats it eventually won me.
HALCYON WAY has worked hard and produced five multilayered songs that have excellent musicianship with great melodies and feeling. The production is in high standards with every instrument having the proper levels. Steve Braun has done a great work concerning vocals and the Maltenieks's growls are complementing and contrasting Braun's voice successfully. The rest of the songs are more like fillers to me, because it is not new material. If you are new into HALCYON WAY check the new songs. You will not get disappointed at all.
Finally, I was trying to distinguish if the band promotes this as a new full length or an EP, because in their site it is said as album though in most sites it is considered an EP. To my opinion this should be regarded as an EP and as such the grade is as follows.
7 / 10
