Flat Earth - None For One album cover

Say thanks to Niclas (formerly from AMORPHIS) for wanting to release stuff he kept silent for years to the entire world. Say thanks for H.I.M doing their farewell tour.Because former H.I.M members Mikko Lindström and Mika Karppinen teamed up with him and with POLANSKI's vocalist Anthony Pikkarianen to form a brand new rock band. An alternative rock band. Pikkarianen's voice is very emotionally communicative and fits the music. It was released on November 9th 2018. The cover artwork is by Minna Niskanen, representing a cat in a weird way. I'm sure of the link with the album title...

Of course we can hear AMORPHIS sonorities here and there, the Finnish sound we're used too but aimed at a different level. We have songs who will satisfy alternative rockers like the title track, "None For One",progressive rockers with "The Glow".This isn't pre-formated music. "Noble swine" offers a faster pace, with an almost metal approach. The guitar is melodic, the vocals are cool and the harmonies used are effective and welcome. "Limelight" proposes a sleazy but catchy chorus and is overall a good track. "Cyanide" has poisonous riffs, thrilling bass hooks and is quite an entertaining one. "Given time" is a power ballad with incredible and professional vocals rendering. Musicianship and talent is an evidence here.

I guess having two members issued from the same past band help a lot starting with already massive cohesion between them. They all fit in the same cauldron brewing some very interesting music. I wasn't sure at first, as alternative rock may sound obviously less creative or more easy catchy songs. But they do it with an original sound (with sonorities already heard from time to time) and they have this European feel in their music that makes it more original to me. I'm used to american alternative rock more than European. It gives a brand new breath to the genre in its own way. This album is well balanced, having many ideas to share, displaying a wide variety of creative arrangements while keeping it very accessible. That's what alternative rock is usually aiming for. They succeeded in getting my attention, playing with my curiosity and teasing me from start to finish. From "Subhuman" to the exploding "Kill My God", we are offered an enjoyable journey in the world of FLAT EARTH. The album was recorded at studios Finnvox & Coal House Studio in March-April 2018 in Helsinki with producer Hiili Hiilesmaa (HIM, AMORPHIS, THE 69 EYES, APOCALYPTICA).

I wish them inspiration and to record a second one soon!
