Transitions
Fallen To Flux

After four years of touring, recording and sheer hard work, "Transitions" is the debut full-length album from the London-based four-piece FALLEN TO FLUX.
Feeding on their inspirations from modern Metal, the album is awash with technical guitar work and soaring vocal melodies. The album's 12 tracks are full of catchy hooks and some impressive lead lines, which are supported by plenty of vocal harmonies. Yet FALLEN TO FLUX doesn't seem to reach the full heaviness that the album suggests.
The music and style suggests that this should be the kind of band that goes between clean and dirty vocal styles with ease, offering contrasting sections and climaxes to long build ups within. However, the whole thing seems to plateau a bit below the level that it really needs to reach.
The songwriting is all of a very similar style, with very little to change up the tone throughout the release (there are no real "Transitions" here...), and each song is almost entirely interchangeable with anything else they have recorded, which leads to a fairly dull listening experience. There is not even a particularly large difference in tempos between the tracks, which further adds to the feeling that the songs are all far too similar...and rather flat.
The entire album feels very derivative of things that have come before, and while being obviously inspired and influenced, FALLEN TO FLUX have taken it to a level where there is nothing to really make this stand out from the seemingly endless stream of young, "modern", Melodic Metal bands that are currently in vogue. "Transitions" lacks anything to make it stand out from a line up of any given releases; and it almost feels like the band was playing it safe with everything that was laid down here.
Overall, while FALLEN TO FLUX are clearly skilled musicians - with plenty of melodic sensibilities and heart - "Transitions" lacks originality and excitement, which is keeping them firmly lost within a crowd of their peers.
