Technical Death Metal was born in the 90's, having in mind that the genre could sound brutal and nasty as it already was, but using a refined technical work. SUFFOCATION was one of the pioneers of this specific genre, but as time passed by since then, many bands started play in the same way, but with many giving contributions to expand limits. The North American quintet ESCATHON can be a new name (because "Death Obsession" is just their second album), but it seems to be here to make things improve.

They're into a Technical Death Metal and brutal and technically sick as the listener can think, but bearing some modern elements that comes from Deathcore as well. So the fusion earns a band an amazing energy and a personality (that needs to be lapidated in a better way on the next release). For now, their brutal and technical work really can amaze many, and for sure will increase their fans' ranks. The sound quality that "Death Obsession" bears is very good, indeed. It sounds clean and defined in many ways, but keeping the essential crude elements to sound heavy, sick and nasty as Death Metal needs to be. Yes, it's a very good work, done in a modern way that allows the instrumental tunes to be heard and understood.

The massive shrapnel of guitar riffs called "Born into Shadows", the brutal and technical rhythm of "Tides of Betrayal", the all-out-war approach on "Death Obsession" (aggressive to the bones, but with great broken tempos and an insane groove approach can be heard in some moments), the charming shreds heard on the guitars on "Wake of the Ophidian" (and what good guttural grunts), and the short attacks called "Of Freedom and Deception" and "Imperial" can be pointed as their finest killings. Yes, they're truly good.

If you're into a violent and nasty form of music, played with very good technical approach, "Death Obsession" is recorded for you, but never listen to it as your parents are on your house. ESCATHON is the right band for disturbing the peace in the neighborhood.
