EOHUM is a Blackened Doom Metal band based out of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Formed in 2010, the band had previously release a demo album. This EP is the first, and contains five tracks. The slow thuds of the bass drum in "Eurocide" are like the footsteps of Doom coming for you. The flute passage at the beginning bares little connection with the melody of the main riff, but I am sure the dissonance is deliberate. From there the song picks up pace and is very much inside the Black Metal fence, especially from the high pitched vocal screams. However, the proverbial "wall of sound" trades off with passages of Doom. "Unmasking a World of Deceit" hits you hard from the start, with a scorching pace and thunderous drumming. There is once again a pretty even trade-off in the Black and Doom Metal passages, but not an overly noticeable presence of flute or horn.

"The Apathetic Plague" is a little longer but the structure is very similar the previous tracks. You can hear some horn notes here but they are very much in the background, to my chagrin. "Ode to a Martyr" is in a different key at times but they are not stretching out very much on this debut EP. Instead they are establishing a baseline sound which is traditional but not very exciting. "Curative Undulations" closes the album, with full fury and unmatched energy. The band's vision is pretty clear on this debut EP. Morphing Black Metal and Doom has the potential to be something pretty unique, and I think they are still climbing that mountain, but on their way up. The Black Metal genre itself has been very diversified as of late and there is opportunity to really make your own creative mark. With a band this young I would expect the safer approach that I heard on the album. This isn't to suggest that it is bad, just safe. I would look forward to hearing more from them in the future.
