Secrets of The Past
Disaster
DISASTER are a Colombian thrash metal band or quartet who came together in 1997-'98 by vocalist/guitarist ANDRES 'MORBID DOG' ALVAREZ and as they released their demo titled REHEARSAL in 2005. After this release the band took a step back as there changes in the lineup, but once this happened, they released their debut album BLASPHEMY ATTACK in 2014. The album was released through Iron Shield Records received high appraisals and they shared a stage with EXODUS and HAVOK.
The lineup of the band now has 4 members including ANDRES being the bands founding member, followed by two key members; ESTEBAN ARBOLEDA and JUAN CAMILO GALLEGO VÉLEZ. On their second album titled SECRETS OF THE PAST also features rhythm guitarist EDISON LOCUY MONSALVE making a great contribution. Their second album begins with "Demonic Curse" pedaling fast with guitar hooks and pulsating drums but clear and concise. There are much heavier and thicker parts with drums, guitar keeping rhythm mostly second track "Ancient Rites" with more boomy drums and surrounding with glowing guitar vibrato.
"Cold Blood" follows guitar shrieks and thundering drums shattering the audio spectrum together led by evil or spooky elements. Vocals go from one singer to full backing harmonies so their vocals are clinical. Thrash rhythms still stay active and as we go onto the next track titled "Suffer In Pain". This is also a short enough track full of clashing or continuous clattering but I can sense an evil darkness and maybe themes of death. Continuing on with the next track "Living Fast Dying Young" which is a lot heavier or denser with guitar spearing out melodic or raw hooks accompanied by the other instrument.
Drums don't let us down simply superb and not much vocals so a chance for guitar, bass guitar & drums to rise up. "Without Tomorrow" has a focus with the lower end of sound but also the audio of guitar swapping sides and varying in pitch is nicely done. This has a more post punk and hardcore sound, thrash elements certainly exist too but not as much this time. "Blinded" has that edgy encounter with guitar and drums starting at an average tempo then taking it up a notch or two.
Those evil vocals make their mark in this track arranged before and the drums bring some contrast. Guitar and vocals have a sort of IRON MAIDEN style, wicked but incredible. The vocals at the end sound sinister before we go into the next track titled "Dark Reality" with drum intro like a hardcore punk drum rhythm. Vocals sound more bouncy and come with a serious attitude like a BEASTIE BOYS approach with lyrics or words being spaced like hip hop lyrics.
A long shout from vocals with pulse racing drums and separate guitar parts/hooks. Into the penultimate track which is "Promised Land" with soloistic drums & guitar thrashing as usual, vocals spitting and onset of intimidating punches by drums. The last track is "Disillusions" bringing this album to it's final hurdle, smooth and calmer at first. Mellow guitar into but then brings all other instruments into the spotlight. No vocals so far as guitar compensates for absent lyrics as this is more instrumental based. This is a nice way to end for sure, so much going on all the way through this album.
There is of course so much thrash influences in this album, maybe hints of power metal or speed metal but little to contemplate was certainly enjoying guitar, drums adds the rhythm or drive the music needs with the injection of wild vocals. I look forward to hearing more of these guys very soon hopefully!
