Childrain - The Silver Ghost album cover

The only information on the band comes from their Facebook page, and it reads: Formed in Vitoria-Gasteiz in 2008 (an autonomous community in Spain), this young band performs a powerful Metal whose influences range is very wide, which leads them to achieve their own sound. Encyclopaedia Metallum lists them as Melodic Death Metal/Metacore. "The Silver Ghost" contains nine new tracks.

"Wake the Ghost" leads off the album, with doleful clean guitar notes that begin to build. That opening main riff is really nice...hard, aggressive and rhythmic. The vocals are pure hatred, and the guitars hit some nice accents. The chorus is full on with clean vocals. "Saviors of the Earth" moves slowly, with rhythm and opens with low, clean vocals. The lead guitars build in a little melody to the track, while the vocals go deep and hard. "The Valley of Hope" opens with guitars echoing each other, and then a fast moving pace from the drums. Mikel is a solid timekeeper in the band, supplying the rhythm that will fuel the song. I suppose one could call this Metalcore, but it's more than that. Melody is ever-present; something that is often missing in this style of music.

"Saturnia" has a slow moving pace of open notes with some harmonic leads. The lead guitars keep things interesting in an otherwise fairly bland track. "The Silver Walker" opens with some drum fills and a scream, leading to a mid-tempo song with a sad feeling overall. The guitars do a really nice job of carrying the sound here, and in a variety of different ways. "Interstellar" features twin guitar harmonies and clean vocals, amidst the rugged main riff. "Eon" is a slow moving track with an easy listening riff. At times, they remind me of the Russian Dark Metal band DARKSEED. The music is at times doleful and melancholy, while being energetic and tough at others. The cleans in the choruses here really nail the point. "Ten Thousand Moons" has a very depressing sound, driven home by punishing guitar riffs and poignant vocals. "Omega" closes the album, at first with clean guitars and then a heavy, weighted riff. The clean vocal harmonies are great in the chorus, but the overall song feels a bit thin for me.

This is the band's fourth album. By this time, they are about as good as they are going to be. I found the style to be fairly original, but with inconsistent delivery. There were some solid hit and some not-so-solid missed, but you can tell the band plays with tight musicianship and well-written material. With a gun to my head I'd have to call it Metalcore, but with excellent guitar work it becomes more, and with a focus on Melody amidst the intensity of the vocals.
