So German Death Metal legends CHAPEL OF DISEASE bring out their weirdly titled 3rd full length album "...And As We Have Seen The Storm, We Have Embraced The Eye" this November, and from what I have listened to in bits and pieces, it sounds really exciting.
A 6 song album of 47 minutes and I have to say, I am both nervous and excited at the same time. "Void of Words' starts off with a fast paced guitar picking, before the guttural vocals of Laurent Teubl come at you screaming. There is a lot of chaos here, but amidst the chaos is some great guitar work and also a complete surprisingly great melodic parts with some acoustic guitar strumming and few fast paced solos. It all sounds unique and beautiful, and not what I expected from this record. "Oblivious - Obnoxious" starts where the previous song ends, with the sharp guitar solos, which I must say are quite beautiful for a Death Metal record. The song does get heavier as it progresses, and the song gets better with each minute of its 7 minutes, and Laurent Teubl does a great job here in the vocals department, which I think for me, actually saves an otherwise ordinary song here.
"Song of the Gods" starts off in a very melodic fashion with the electric guitars working their magic, before the main riff gets heavier with the help of other instruments. The song chugs along really fine with its infectious main riff and the vocals and other instruments complementing them perfectly. This has to be the Death Metal version of your typical Stoner Metal song about riding or travelling. The longest song here of 9 min in "Null", is anything but null. It oscillates between doomy mid-tempo riffs and acoustic country song (like in the previous song) and heavy chaotic Death Metal. "1.000 Different Paths" is full of Doomy Death Metal goodness. The 2 guitars complement each other with solos and great sharp fast paced riffs. This is some of the finest sound in Death Metal to come out of in recent times, which isn't just brutal pummeling of the instruments.
The album ends with another long 9 min song in "The Sound of Shallow Grey", which is a full on assault on your ears (in a good way) with sharp guitar work and the usual guttural vocals spread across the song, all the way through. The song does suffer a bit due to the lack of variety which I think is the hallmark of this record. Almost everything about "...And As We Have Seen The Storm, We Have Embraced The Eye" has novelty written all over it. It's larger than life in many ways, and takes you into this long journeys that often takes unexpected turns. Don't be deceived by the band's logo or even the album artwork, this one will surprise you.
