Chains Of Past Decisions - Patience album cover

To be frank I had some expectations right before I took on this Hardcore / Metal release. I was expecting for something more free willing like AGNOSTIC FRONT and other oriented 80s Hardcore stuff from the US. However, I realized that I forgot that the Hardcore scene evolved since more than twenty years ago when I started listening to the "Patience" EP by the Israeli band, CHAINS OF PAST DECISIONS. It is right to recognize this group as a Hardcore band, yet, is has progressed a lot and even reached to metallic boarders.

This band has its way on being diverse with its music. Usually, Hardcore can be easily driven and it can be also smooth and catchy when needed. Nevertheless, what is being displayed here is more constructive with shout-outs to other realms. "Patience" has influences that were in a way taken from Emo, Metal and Grunge as all of those were mixed under a thin cloud of complexity. .

I think that the instrumental track, and also the self-titled, "Patience", comes as the best example of what I am writing here. This is one of the best modernized instrumentals, that weren't directly connected to Metal, that I have ever heard in a long time. It is intelligent, artistic and constructive while showcasing the band with honor. When it came down to the non-instrumental tracks, I was amazed by the sounds of "Lift Me Up", "Sinking Battleships" and "Loud & Clear" that really took me by surprise of how this material sounds so different from similar outcomes that can be seen on TV, and you know where I meant.

Even though this is high potential quality stuff, I was a bit puzzled about the vocal section. I like growls in general, but I couldn't find too much enjoyment on the singing in the vein of screamo type vocals. At least the vocalist gave some better moments with clean softy chantings that were pretty emotive. I think that the new age Hardcore should consider revising its vocal patterns into what it was in the past, angry and without distortions. Those screamos ain't that impressive, although there are areas where they fit, but in general, not that good.

CHAINS OF PAST DECISIONS broke Hardcore and made it more interesting. With the help of other genres as Metal, Emo and Grunge they did an impressive job on their debut EP.
