Cancerous Womb - It Came To This album cover

You could say that this EP is a fair goodbye, for it is indeed CANCEROUS WOMB's last material. The surprising split of this infamous Edinburgh-based Death Metal/Grind Core band was quite a shock for some, including me. I got to know this band via their previous vocalist (who used to sing in CEREBRAL BORE) however, the lineup changed a lot since then. As a band they had only existed for 8 years, being formed in 2008, and you can't say that they were inactive during their years of playing. They released the "Austrian Basement" EP a year after their formation along with a split entitled "Split Roast" (which consisted of five bands) with their only full-length being "Born Of A Cancerous Womb" (the material that got me into them). "It Came To This", their last EP, was released on July 5th, 2016, via Rising Nemesis Records.

I'm not quite sure what the reason behind the split was, but I must say that the material this band has left behind is truly worthy of checking out; just like this EP. It has 4 songs, with 3 of them being originals and one a truly fine Napalm Death cover. Now onto the tracks! The first one, "The Shrieking Of Idiots", starts off with an interesting mix of both fast and slow rhythms. The riffs are sludgy and the vocals are deep, and even though the latter slightly toned out and silent in the background, I nonetheless got the point; which was to highlight the instruments. The vocals themselves are incredible; they are growl/scream-based mixtures of both Death Metal and Grindcore. This is also the longest track on the EP, and it's 4:33 minutes long.

The EP itself is almost 10 minutes long, but it's absolutely worth your time. Actually, you can't even have an excuse not to blast such a cool EP...being that it's the last record by the band. Do it for them. The second track, "Formless" is a fast and really short song; as Grindcore songs usually are. This one lacks the blast beats of the first one, but it's completely Grindcore-oriented and those incredibly high-speed riffs must be mentioned. Watch out, it's a weird track. "Isolation Frenzy", however, returns to where the first one left off with blast beats, incredible drumming and deep both growl/scream vocals, incredible riffage and a perfect mixture of the two genres.

There is no much to say about the cover "When All Is Said And Done"; even though I usually like to listen to covers, just so I can challenge the bands in my mind and see whether they can top the original... and yes, sometimes they do. This one is actually quite close to being as good as the original; the band even perfectly copied the vocal and guitar work and they did a good job on the track, but most importantly on the EP itself. If you like: PROSTITUTE DISFIGUREMENT, CATTLE DECAPITATION, NASUM, and Death-Grind in general, jump on this EP and praise CANCEROUS WOMB!
