Metal maniacs, rejoice! The Thrasher returns to present to you: CADAVERIC FUMES; signed via Blood Harvest Records, hailing from France...performing Death Metal - on their 2nd EP entitled: "Dimensions Obscure". (released on May 2nd, 2016).

Since formation in 2011; the quintet in question have a demo, split, an EP, and a compilation behind them. I'm acquainted with their 2nd EP "Dimensions Obscure", an interestingly implemented Death Metal acquisition that distinctively element a unique Black Metal aesthetic at first glance (with how the artwork is depicted). CADAVERIC FUMES progressively compile a substantial amount of psychedelic Death elements that at least for me sounds utterly unprecedented for atmospheric Death Metal. A Psychedelic aesthetic in Death Metal? Almost sounds like a motive to go Prog; which is fine, yet my history of Prog in all genres has been on and off. Yet with this here EP; I can't help but sense a joint combination with this substance built in. It works, to an extent...with the help of a distinct intention at a concept album in the future. Musically, a brutal slab of raw blackened Death Metal, atmospherically...an assorted instrumental mess of sorts.

Consisting of Romain Gibet on vocals portraits a stunning range of complex brutality in his cords that takes part in the Prog sense I had earlier. The instrumentation is comprised with dexterity in mind with the efforts from Wenceslas Carrieu on guitar proficiently compiles a very adroit sense of style in his playing. While the efficient flair of the powerhouse from Léo Brard on drums and Reuben Muntrand on bass prominently showcase pummeling exertion nicely; the acquisition features an acute sense of musicianship with paralleled indifferences in which consistently balances the brutal atmosphere of Death Metal while fusing Technical and Progressive Metal substances for an organic formula. "Dimensions Obscure" ranges at around 25:15 long with only 4 fairly consistent tracks that gives you a taste for things to come...the EP has good songwriting, but lacks memorable fulfillment where the sound production sounds a bit - distorted.

"A Crepuscular Journey" begins "Dimensions Obscure" with an eerie, ominous keyboardist flourishing with surprisingly warm and unique guitar sounds...though as the EP continues; I noticed "Extatic Extirpation" & "Where Darkness Reigns Pristine" is where the aforementioned distortion comes in, it doesn't sound awful...just lacking in that intense Death Metal brutality that I would expect. However, keep in mind that this is EP territory and so the experimentation may seem sloppy at first, at least I would assume. There is still a great deal of promise in the band's early life cycle. "Swallowed Into Eternity" finalizes the EP with an 8-minute long tremendous amount of warmth and beefiness that isn't too overpowering. Compelled to say that this French quissac has created something that is hard to gauge in full effect in EP form; I am certain though that they have unleashed an intriguing snapshot as to where the band is headed. A fairly good EP.<
