Known as Örth since 1993, and led by V.Rex, one of Norway's unsung heroes from the Extreme Metal scene and arisen from the ashes since 2010 as ARVAS, overcoming multiple challenges, they are an outstanding band from Norway that have been developing this album deep in the very Hades of the country and scene that witnessed the birth of Black Metal itself. A true gem of the genre, this record implodes into the very essence of the core of its presence as both a new proposal and an homage to their predecessors.
Although Black Metal is known to employ "Bad recording" layouts as a matter of identifying itself, and it has been a personal preoccupation of mine to hear a record with top production targeted towards 666 % satanic Black Metal, and this is finally the case. "This Scarred Soul" is the perfect introduction track for whatever new fans may emerge as an outcome of this record, for although the name ARVAS may seem new to the metal scene it is far from that, and the listeners and mostly enthusiasts of Black Metal will find this work worthy of comparison with the greatest names in its bleak and demon infested halls.
"Evil" is my favorite track for this album, even though it's a cover of Mercyful Fate, the addendums provided by ARVAS amplify and enhance the purpose of the presence of such a classic as the closure to the two-decade work that rendered this record, to close with a flourish and leave the fans wanting more. Mastery and prowess in the execution of their craft, as the story in their Facebook profile quotes, this is early black metal performed as if Euronymus was still alive and acknowledged as the mentor of the genre, displayed in today's technological resources and production methods; undoubtedly a must in every Metal Temple true Believer, a perfect example to the contemporary rise and evolution of Black Metal and the way to its roots.
