"Autonomy" is KEKAL's 9th full-length album. Carefully crafted and anxiously delivered, the music on "Autonomy" can be best described as emotionally adventurous and introspective in nature. As dark as it is illuminating, this album will definitely challenge listeners to free themselves from seeing music as a mere entertainment commodity. Simplicity takes the most important role as it values the most basic and primordial drive to balance life's complexities. The visual artwork in the form of photography helps complement the music, and together, they create one solid statement to evoke our subconscious minds - the wildest imaginations that oftentimes are being suppressed in a conscious level by conformity to the norms. Formed in 1995 as an extreme metal band (particularly within the black metal and death metal sub-genres), KEKAL maintains their underground cult status among metal enthusiasts around the world while continuing to explore musical (im)possibilities so deeply into the realms of avantgarde and even stepping out of the metal cliché, a move that is seemingly taboo for most metal bands to embrace.
They have released 9 full-length albums since 1998 with highlights such as "1000 Thoughts of Violence" (2003), "Acidity" (2005) and "The Habit of Fire" (2007), which received media praises and fair popularity for their daring uniqueness and originality. They also became the first metal band from Indonesia who did the European Tour in 2004.
In 2009 KEKAL became the first band in the world to exist without any official band member (and has since released another 2 full-length albums). All original members left the band in 2009, but they continue to supply their artistic outputs such as music and artwork for KEKAL, albeit not as official members.
To understand KEKAL is to appreciate their music. In order to appreciate their music, a thorough and repeated loud-play listens of the entire album is mandatory.
