Masquerage - Breaking the Masks album cover

MASQUERAGE is a Power Metal band hailing from Finland. Formed in 1998, this is the group's fourth full-length album, and contains nine tracks. "After the End" is the lead-off song. It's pretty tame on the Power Metal spectrum and is more loose and open than some of the sounds we hear in this genre. Still, it utilizes strong melody like you would observe in some Classic Metal or AOR. "Cold Sweat" has a grittier edge and some forward thinking energy, mostly provided by the main guitar riff. A complimentary guitar solo with plenty of finger tapping showcases some instrumental prowess as well. "Dead Buried Six Feet Under" has more of that Power Metal sound than the previous tracks, being hastier and with higher range vocals and an extended chorus.

"Men in Disguise" is a mid-tempo number with an air of mystery. The keyboards shine through strong in this song especially. It has a deeper and more meaningful sound as well. "Rats in the Attic" is more upbeat and in your face. The rhythm is fueled by a galloping bass guitar and drum section. "Sad Things Never Last Forever" is a slower song driven with a great opening guitar riff, and with more emotional peaks, especially in the vocals. The keys in the background of the chorus provide a thickened structure which is very pleasing. "The Metal Call" is a fist-raising anthem, as you might expect from the title. I picture a group of well armed soldiers on horses recruiting for the cause and growing with every stop along the countryside. "Touch of Greed" has a more ominous and dangerous kind of sound with some more bottom end bombast.

"Work-Holic-Fool" closes the album. I suspect the title points towards the fun side of the music industry and how well creating and performing music can be enjoyed. Overall I enjoyed the album. I appreciate the fact that some of the Power Metal elements were kept in the background, allowing the main riff, vocals and keys in particular to take center stage, There is also an undeniable IRON MAIDEN influence that I could hear now and then, especially in some of the dual guitar parts, bridges and interludes. That being said,
