Each nation in the world always seems to specialize in one genre or maybe sometimes multiple genres. For example, the Europeans are great at Melodic Rock but they can also do Hard Rock too. Americans are great at Hard Rock and there are a lot of artists who seem to specialize in that genre from that country.
CHROME PUBLIC are but one of those many American Hard Rock bands and this year they have released their debut self titled EP independently. I have no problems with American Hard Rock bands as there are some I like but is CHROME PUBLIC good enough to fall into that list? Let us find out shall we?
Formed in 2013 in Los Angeles, this 4 piece Hard Rock quartet have released one single and their debut EP containing six songs with five being originals and one being a cover. The debut self titled EP from CHROME PUBLIC was recorded at Titan Studios with Michael Vail Blum (PINK FLOYD), mixed by Davide Fant and mastered by Maor Appelbaum (ROB HALFORD, YES) and released on June 13th 2014.
Some Hard Rock bands can often fuse in a blend of other styles of Rock in their Hard Rock formula and it seems like CHROME PUBLIC are just one of those as I am picking up vibes of Melodic Rock in a couple of songs such as "One Last Prayer" and "Smile" which if you ask me is a good move as it often pays to mix things up and experiment with different genres when recording an album. For some artists the experimental ideas fail but for others they succeed and CHROME PUBLIC are one of those.
So what about the performance and the music itself? Well for one thing it sounds very much like a Hard Rock record should. The music is clear, the guitars are heavy, the drumbeats are heavy, the bass lines are deep and the vocals are crisp with the words actually being hearable as some singers fall into a trap of trying to make their vocals sound too heavy and often you cannot hear what they are saying but that's not the case here.
After the first 5 songs which are original recordings, we are treated to a cover of "Diamonds" by Pop artist RIHANNA which if you ask me is a very odd move to make as I'm not exactly a fan of the Pop genre and a Rock band covering a Pop song does seem like quite a risk to take. Having not heard the original version, I do not know how to compare it to the cover but if I did, I'd choose the cover version as everything sounds better when you add Rock instruments to the mix and this is a very likable cover of a song from a genre I am not a fan of.
So now it's time for the final verdict. Earlier I asked if CHROME PUBLIC are a band I would add to my list of American Hard Rock bands that I like and the answer is yes they are. I did not find one song that I disliked and I did not really find anything wrong or anything worth nitpicking about with the music and the performance from the four musicians involved with this debut EP.
What I like about this EP is that there is a good blend of both Hard Rock in this EP with songs such as "No Truth" and "Come Again" combined with a bit of Melodic Rock here and there with songs such as "One Last Prayer" and "Smile" and if you like a good blend of styles and genres in the music you listen to then CHROME PUBLIC is one band you should add to your list of new up and coming bands to watch.
