Waiting For The End To Come
Kataklysm
It takes one to bring it all down. A single individual can contract a chain reaction that will evidently change the face of history, whether for doing positive deeds for the greater good or may it be unrestrained malice that will shake entire foundation of the worldwide social structure. This is no myth by chance, or some distant legend or a prophecy, it could actually happen. A single person is a society, and the society is the entire human race, and it can slowly go sour in a blink of an eye into its impending doom. Without being prophets, yet by serving as bystanders like the rest, the Canadian KATAKLYSM has its own forecast version of their all seeing eye on their new apocalyptic "Waiting For The End To Come", via Nuclear Blast Records. With their gradual insertion under the crusts of Melodic Death Metal, in comparison to their ghastly past, along with a clear contemporary parlay, KATAKLYSM unleashed their usual mayhem with a fine composure that had me contemplating the blackened Death conviction of later era of GOD DETHRONED transfused with the prowling Gothenburg driven melodic bestiality of AT THE GATES. Is that the beginning of a new era after the demise of an older existence that the band's vocalist Maurizio Iacono meant in his statement? I guess it would have be you to decide for yourself.
Frankly, I have never being an over enthusiastic fan of the modernization of Death Metal, along with the slow shattering of the Gothenburg melodious extremity of the early 90's and the mutation into American driven Metalcore, on the other hand, I it would be foolish of me to declare my disappointment over every bit of occasion. KATAKLYSM, as one of the oldest North American Death Metal bands, always left this profound mythical feeling, attributing a decisive brutal intent, attacking with ferocity as expected from and old school Death Metal band. In the past decade, there has been a shift, obtaining melodic elements of European nature yet without abandoning the old legacy behind. All across the barricades and desolate lands of "Waiting For The End To Come" is one step closer into a dynamic sort of harmony state, KATAKLYSM composed melodic features that turned out quite enchanting, elevating the ambience of chug meaty riffery, and even accomplishing the groundwork of another dimension for the vocals, especially on the choruses that on several occurrences upgraded the band's material. Jean-Francois Dagenais's guitar work is pretty impressive, aside for the melodic lines, there is a fine divergence within the Death Metal doctrine with merits of modern grooves and pictorials of Doom infestations. I was rather disappointed from the fact that Dagenais couldn't generate any decent soloing as an escalation for songs, other than the average demonstration on the intro of "Dead & Buried", it would have been something that's for sure.
The enticing measure of the closing track, "Elevate", simply blew me away, Even though KATAKLYSM's constant habitual of indulging the same melodic patterns is highly noticeable, and trust me that this notion sustained itself on other songs. It captured my close attention from the first charming lick through the early 90's Swedish riffery right on to a bombastic chorus. "Fire" and "Kill the Elite" reeked of the war consumed nature of malignant GOD DETHRONED closer to a blackened realm, yet KATAKLYSM capitalized their melodies. "Dead & Buried" is KATAKLYSM's groove Metal calling card but also a swift scorcher with its melodic riffery and assorted mood changes. "Empire Of Dirt" turns into an old school beast, brutal and weighty while "Real Blood - Real Scars" and "The Promise" attest the new imagery of the Gothenburg Death Metal directive. Closer to the edge of the destruction there is something here that is worth listening, a distant echo in the horizon screaming for revenge against whoever raptured the surrounding world. KATAKLYSM holds their doomsday vision, raveled under a blanket of Metallic durability, have a go at it if you dare, it is a promise in blood.
